Marzia Banci, Saturday's Nail
Brooches, 2023, sterling silver, 585 gold, iron, w 9 cm × h 6.5 cm, nail l 14.5 cm.
The work is divided into nine brooches with engravings taken from renowned paintings, and should be analysed from the bottom up: Sleeping Soldiers at Christ's Feet (from The Resurrection by Piero della Francesca), The Ambassadors (by Hans Holbein the Younger) and The Flagellation (by Piero della Francesca).
To the left of the viewer is The Prophet Muhammad Praying at the Kaaba (from an Ottoman miniature), and to the right are the Gods of the Olympus.
Moving upwards, in the middle - The Risen Christ (from the Resurrection by Piero della Francesca); left - The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament (by Raphael); right - The School of Athens (by Raphael).
At the top is The Trinity (by Rublev).
A nail symbolising the Crucifixion is placed on the work; it is also called 'Saturday's nail' because on the Jewish Shabbat all activities stop and therefore, nobody will be crucified on that day. The nine images teach us that our duty in life is to indulge not in pólemos, but in the ascetic silence of Love.
