Daniela Banci, They Preferred Darkness to Light. Skótos - Phós Sculpture, 2023, wood, brass, w 20 cm × l 20 cm × h 10 cm

The sculpture is made up of a wooden base surmounted, in the middle, by an open, fissured decahedron in burnished frosted brass. The title quotes a verse from the Bible, 'Light has come into the  world, but people loved darkness instead of light...' (John 3:19-21) to represent the duality of light (phós) and darkness (skótos), forever symbols of good and evil. A warning to our Europe: will the light of dialogue prevail over the darkness of individualism for its own sake?
